Bareilly    is a prominent city in Bareilly district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Standing on the Ramgangariver, it is the capital of the Bareilly division and the geographical region Rohilkhand. It is located 252 kilometres (157 mi) north of the state capital, Lucknow, and 250 kilometres (155 mi) east of the national capital New Delhi.
Bareilly is a centre for the manufacturing of furniture and for trade in cotton, cereal and sugar. The status of the city was upgraded when its name was included in the "Counter Magnets" of the National Capital Region (NCR), a list that also including HissarPatialaKota and Gwalior. Bareilly historically was also called Sanjashya, where the Buddha descended from the Tushita heaven onto the earth.  
This fast-growing city is also known as Bans-Bareilly. Although Bareilly is a production center for cane (bans) furniture, the name Bans Bareilly is not derived from its big bans market. It is named after two princes, Bansaldev and Baraldev, sons of Jagat Singh Katehriya who founded the city in 1537.  It is also famous all over the world for the Ala Hazrat Dargah.


Ancient period

Historically, the Bareilly region has found mention since the times of the Mahabharata. The fortress of Ahichhattra was an important cultural, political and religious center through the ancient period.
Panchala Kingdom

Rule of Nanda, Maurya, Gupta and Maukharis Empire
Historically, the Panchala Kingdom occupied the region the east of the Kuru Kingdom between the upper Himalayas and the river Ganga. The country was divided into Uttara-Panchala (Northern Panchala) and Dakshina-Panchala (Southern Panchala). Ahicchattra, in the Aonla region of Bareilly, was the capital of Northern Panchala. The Bareilly region is said to be the birthplace of Draupadi.

The experiment in non-monarchical form of Government in Panchala was soon engulfed in the growing Magadhan imperialism – first under the Nandas and then under the Mauryas. The fall of the Mauryan empire saw the emergence of numerous small and independent states in the whole Ganga Valley. It saw a remarkable revival in the fortunes of Panchala which once again came to occupy a very significant position in the history of northern India.
                     Evidence reveals that the Panchal coins were minted at Bareilly and the surrounding areas during 176–166 BC. Kushan and Gupta kings established mints in the region and this status was retained till the Christian era. The Adi Vigraha and Shree Vigraha coins of the Pratihara Kings that were minted here between the 4th to the 9th centuries were found at Ganga Ghati. Dating to this period are also the silver coins similar to those of Peroz III.  Later, the city's continued status as a Mint town since the beginning of the Christian era was helped by the fact that Bareilly was never a disturbed area (except at the time of the Independence Struggle).

Panchala emerged at this time as one of the strongest powers in India. About 25 kings who ruled during this period left behind thousands of coins. During the period between the fall of the Mauryas and the rise of the Guptas, the Panchalas had two phases of power – first the pre-Kushan phase, i.e. from c. 150 BC to AD 125, and secondly about fifty years after the fall of the Kushanas, which ended c. AD 350 when Panchala was assimilated in the Gupta empire by Samudragupta. Under the Guptas, Ahichhatra was one of the provinces into which the Gupta empire was divided.
The amalgamation of several religious and popular beliefs may be observed throughout the history of Panchala in ancient India. In addition to being associated with the activities of Pravahana Jaivali, Gargayayana, Uddalaka etc. responsible for giving a distinctive touch to the later vedic thought, the region was also a prominent centre of popular beliefs such as the cult of Nagas, Yaksas and Vetalas.
After the fall of the Guptas in the latter half of the 6th century the district of Bareilly came under the domination of the Maukharis. Under the emperorHarshvardhan (606–47 AD) the district was the part of the Ahichhatra Bhukti.
Rise of Buddhism and Jainism
In the 6th century BC, Panchala was among one of the sixteen mahajanapadas of India. The city was also influenced by Gautam Buddha and his followers. The remains of Buddhist monasteries at Ahichhatra are quite extensive. Folklore has it that Gautama Buddha once visited the ancient fortress city of Ahicchattra in Bareilly. Bareilly, historically, was also called Sanjashya, where the Buddha descended from the Tushita heaven onto the earth.  
The Jain Tirthankara Parshvanath is said to have attained Kaivalya at Ahichhatra. The echoes of the Bhagavatas and the Saivas at Ahichhatrra can still be seen in the towering monuments of a massive temples, which is the most imposing structure of the site.
During Harsha's reign the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen Tsang also visited Ahichhatra about 635 AD. 
Medieval Period
After the death of Harsha this region falls under anarchy and confusion. In the second quarter of eighth century the district was included in the kingdom of Yashavarman (725–52 AD) of Kannauj and after him the Ayudha kings also Kannauj became the masters of the district for several decades. With the rise of the power of the Gurjara Pratiharas in the 9th century, Bareilly came under their sway. It continued under their subordination till the end of the tenth century.
Mahmud of Ghazni gave a death blow to the already decaying Gurjara Pretihara power. After the fall of the Gurjara Pretiharas Ahichhetra ceases to remain a flourishing cultural centre of the region. The seat of the royal power was shifted from Ahichhatra to Vodamayuta or modern Badaun as the irrefutable evidence of Rashtrakuta Chief Lakhanpalas inscription shows.
After the fall of the Gurjara Pretihara, the City was under the rule of local rulers. In the twelfth century it was ruled by different clans of Rajputs referred to by the general name of Katehriyas (Kshatriya) Rajputs. The province was largely held by Rajputs of different clans such as Bachal, Gaur, Chauhan and Rathor.  The tract of land forming the subah or province (of Rohilkhand) was formerly called Katehr/Katiher. 
The Katehriyas are to be noted for their conspicuous role in persistently resisting the onslaught of the Delhi rulers till as late as the time of Akbar. The origin and the rise of the Katehar Rajputs in the region is a mystery and a matter of controversy. 
At the beginning of the thirteenth century, when the Delhi Sultanate was firmly established, Katehr was divided into the provinces of Sambhal and Budaun. But the thickly forested country infested with wild animals provided just the right kind of shelter for rebels. And indeed, Katehr was famous for rebellions against imperial authority. During the Sultanate rule, there were frequent rebellions in Katehr. All were ruthlessly crushed. Sultan Balban (1266–1287) ordered vast tracts of jungle to be cleared so as to make the area unsafe for the insurgents.
The slightest weakening of the central authority provoked acts of defiance from the Katehriya Rajputs. Thus the Mughals initiated the policy of allotting lands for Afghan settlements in Katiher. Afghan settlements continued to be encouraged throughout the reign of Aurangzeb (1658–1707) and even after his death. These Afghans, known as the Rohilla Afghans, caused the area to be known as Rohilkhand.  This move by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir was aimed to suppress Rajput uprisings, which had afflicted this region. Originally, some 20,000 soldiers from variousPashtun Tribes (YusafzaisLodisGhilzaiBarechMarwatDurraniTanoliTarinKakarKhattakAfridi and Baqarzai) were hired by Mughals to provide soldiers to the Mughal armies and this was appreciated by Aurangzeb Alamgir, an additional force of 25,000 men was given respected positions in Mughal Army. However most of them settled in the Katehar region during Nadir Shah's invasion of northern India in 1739 increasing their population up to 100,0000. Due to the large settlement of Rohilla Afghans, the Katehar region gained fame as Rohilkhand.
The city of Bareilly was founded in 1537 by Basdeo, a Katehriya Rajput. The city is mentioned in the histories for the first time by Budayuni who he writes that one Husain Quli Khan was appointed the governor of 'Bareilly and Sambhal' in 1568. The divisions and revenue of the district "being fixed by Todar Mal" were recorded by Abul Fazl in 1596. The foundation of the 'modern' City of Bareilly was laid by Mukrand Rai in 1657. In 1658, Bareilly was made the headquarters of the province of Budaun. 
The Mughal policy of encouraging Afghan settlements for keeping the Katehriyas in check worked only as long as the central government was strong. After Aurangzeb's death, the Afghans, having themselves become local potentates, began to seize and occupy neighboring villages.

Bareilly as a ruined city became crowded with unemployed, restless Rohilla Pathans. Many urban cities in Uttar Pradesh were experiencing economic stagnation and poverty. Naturally, this led to heavy migration overseas to Suriname and Guyana.
 
In 1623 two Afghan brothers of the Barech tribe, Shah Alam and Husain Khan, settled in the region, bringing with them many other Pashtun settlers. It was with the immigration of Daud Khan, an Afghan slave (who originally hails from Roh in Afghanistan) in the region that the Afghan Rohillas had come into prominence. His adopted son Ali Muhammad Khan succeeded in carving out an estate for himself in the district with his headquarter in the region. He was ultimately made the lawful governor of Kateher by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir (ruled 1658–1707), and the region was henceforth called"the land of the Ruhelas." Eventually after the end of the Mughal Empire many Pathans migrated from Rohilkhand.
Meanwhile, Ali Muhammad Khan (1737–1749), grandson of Shah Alam, captured the city of Bareilly and made it his capital, later uniting the Rohillas to form the 'State of Rohilkhand', between 1707 and 1720, making Bareilly his capital. He rapidly rose to power and got confirmed in possession of the lands he had seized. The Emperor created him a Nawab in 1737, and he was recognised as the governor of Rohilkhand in 1740.
According to 1901 census of India, the total Pathan population in Bareilly District was 40,779, out of a total population of 1,090,117.  Their principal clans were the YusafzaisLodisGhilzai, Barech, MarwatDurraniTanoliTarinKakarKhattak, Afridi and Baqarzai. Other important cities were RampurShahjahanpurBadaun, and others. 

Under Rahmat Ali Khan, Rohilla power continued to rise, though the area was torn by strife amongst the rival chieftains and continuous struggles with the neighbouring powers, particularly the Nawab Vazirs of Awadh,
 the Bangash Nawabs,  and the Marathas. 
Ali Muhammad was succeeded by Hafiz Rahmat Khan Barech (1749–1774), whom he appointed h¹fiz or regent of Rohilkhand on his deathbed.[17]Hafiz Rahmat Khan Barech extended the power of Rohilkhand from Almora in the North to Etawah in the South-West.
The term Rohilla is derived from the Pashtu Roh, meaning mountain, and literally means a mountain air, and was used by the Baluch and Jats of the Derajat region to refer to the Pashtun mountains tribes of LoralaiZhob and Waziristan regions. The Muslims in the area are chiefly the descendants of Yousafzai Afghans tribe of Pashtuns, called the Rohilla Pathans of the Mandanh sub-section, (but other Pashtuns also became part of the community), who settled in the country about the year 1720.  Rohilla's Sardar like Daud Khan, Ali Muhammad Khan, and Hafiz Rahmat Khan Barech were from the Afghan tribe the Barech, who were originally from the Kandahar Province of Afghanistan. In Uttar Pradesh, it was used for all Pashtuns, except for the Shia Bangashes who settled in the Rohilkhand region, or men serving under Rohilla chiefs. Rohillas were distinguished by their separate language and culture. They spoke Pashto among each other but gradually lost their language over time and now converse in Urdu.
Bishop Heber described them as follows: – "The country is burdened with a crowd of lazy, profligate, self-called sawars (cavaliers), who, though many of them are not worth a rupee, conceive it derogatory to their gentility and Pathan blood to apply themselves to any honest industry, and obtain for the most part a precarious livelihood by sponging on the industrious tradesmen and farmers, on whom they levy a sort of blackmail, or as hangers-on to the wealthy and noble families yet remaining in the province. These men have no visible means of maintenance, and no visible occupation except that of lounging up and down with their swords and shields, like the ancient Highlanders, whom in many respects they much resemble. 
Rohilkhand (under Hafiz Rahmat Khan Barech) was on the on the winning side at the Third Battle of Panipat of 1761 and successfully blocked the expansion of the Maratha Empire into north India. In 1772 Rohilkhand was invaded by the Marathas; however the Nawabs of Awadh came to the aid of the Rohillas in repulsing the invasion. After the war Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula demanded payment for their help from the Rohilla chief, Hafiz Rahmat Khan Barech. When the demand was refused the Nawab joined with the British under Governor Warren Hastings and his Commander-in-ChiefAlexander Champion, to invade Rohilkhand. The combined forces of Shuja-ud Daulah, the Nawab of Awadh and the Company's forces led by Colonel Champion defeated Hafiz Rahmat Ali Khan in 1774. Hafiz Rahmat Khan Barech was killed in the ensuing battle at Miranpur Katra in 1774. His death finally closing the chapter of Rohilla rule.
Rohilkhand was handed over to the Nawab Vazir of Awadh. From 1774 to 1800, the province was ruled by the Nawabs of Awadh. By 1801, the subsidies due under the various treaties for support of a British force had fallen into hopeless arrears. In order to defray the debt, Nawab Saadat Ali Khan surrendered Rohilkhand to the East India Company by the treaty of November 10, 1801.  
During this period too, Bareilly retained its status as a mint. Emperor Akbar and his descendants minted gold and silver coins at mints in Bareilly. The Afghan conqueror Ahmed Shah Durani too minted gold and silver coins at the Bareilly mint.
During the time of Shah Alam II, Bareilly was the headquarters of Rohilla Sardar Hafiz Rehmat Khan and many more coins were issued. After that, the city was in possession of Awadh Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah. The coins that he issued had BareillyBareilly Aasfabad, and Bareilly kite and fish as identification marks. After that, the minting of coins passed on to the East India Company. 
The Rohillas, after fifty years' precarious independence, were subjugated in 1774 by the confederacy of British troops with the nawab of Oudh's army, which formed so serious a charge against Warren Hastings. Their territory was in that year annexed to Oudh. In 1801 the nawab of Oudh ceded it to the Company in commutation of the subsidy money.
Modern Period
In research ordered by Glyn asking Ghulam Yahya to write an account about 'craftsmen, the names of tools of manufacture and production and their dress and manners', eleven trades found out to be most popular means of livelihood in and around Bareilly in the 1820s were glass manufacture, manufacture of glass bangles, manufacture of lac bangles, crimping, gram parching, wire drawing, charpoy weaving, manufacture of gold and silver thread, keeping a grocer's shop, making jewellery and selling kab¹bs.
 
After the Rohilla War, the change of the power structure did little to soothe the troubled strife torn area; rather the change had the effect to aggravate a precarious state of affairs. There was a general spirit of discontent throughout the district. In 1812, an inordinate enhancement in the revenue demand  and then in 1814 the imposition of a new house tax caused a lot of resentment against the British. "Business stood still, shops were shut and multitudes assembled near the courthouse to petition for the abolition of the tax." The Magistrate, Dembleton, already an unpopular man made things worse by ordering the assessment to be made by a Kotwal. In the skirmish that took place between the rebel masses and the sepoys under Captain Cunningham, three or four hundred people died. In 1818, Glyn was posted as Acting Judge, and the Magistrate of Bareilly, and the Joint Magistrate of Bulundshahr.
Bareilly (Rohilkhand) was a major centre during The Indian Rebellion of 1857 (also known as India's First War of Independence). The Rebellion which began as a mutiny of native soldiers (sepoys) employed by the British East India Company's army, against race and religion based injustices and inequities, on 10 May 1857, in the town of Meerut, soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions which were mainly centered on north central India along the several major river valleys draining the south face of the Himalayas [See red annotated locations on Map at right]but with local episodes extending both northwest to Peshawar on the north-west frontier with Afghanistan and southeast beyond Delhi. Communal hatred led to ugly communal riots in many parts of U.P. The green flag was hoisted and Muslims in Bareilly, Bijnor, Moradabad, and other places the Muslims shouted for the revival of Muslim kingdom. 

During the First War of Indian Independence in 1857, Khan Bhadur Khan issued silver coins from Bareilly as an independent ruler. These coins are a novelty as far as the numismatist is concerned.
 
During the Mutiny of 1857 the Rohillas took a very active part against the English, but since then they have been disarmed.  Khan Badur Khan Rohilla, the grandson of Hafiz Rahmat Khan formed his own government in Bareilly in 1857 Indian revolt against British. There was a widespread popular revolt in many areas such as Awadh, Bundelkhand and Rohilkhand. The rebellion was therefore more than just a military rebellion, and it spanned more than one region.
When the Indian Rebellion of 1857 failed Bareilly, too, was subjugated. Khan Bahadur Khan was sentenced to death and hanged in the Kotwali on February 24, 1860.
The main conflict occurred largely in the upper Gangetic plain and central India, with the major hostilities confined to present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, northern Madhya Pradesh, and the Delhi region. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British East Indian Company power in that region,  and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858.  Some  regard the rebellion as the first of several movements over ninety years to achieve independence, which was finally achieved in 1947.

Bareilly also holds a recognition for being a seat of Islamic scholar and sufi Ahmed Raza Khan Fazil-e-Barelvi(1856–1921 CE),whose works influenced the Barelvi movement of South Asia and his son, Mustafa Raza Khan, commonly known among the Muslims of South Asia as Mufti e Azam e Hind, was born in Bareilly. Ahmed Raza Khan was an authority on numerous topics, including Islamic law, religion, philosophy and the sciences. He was a prolific writer, producing nearly 1,000 works in his lifetime.

 

The population in 1901 was 1,090,117. Bareilly, also, was the headquarters of a brigade in the 7th division of the eastern army corps in British period. 


Geography
Bareilly is located at 28°10′N, 78°23′E, and lies in northern India. It borders Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur on East and Rampur on west, Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand) in North and Badaun in South. It is a level terrain, watered by many streams, the general slope being towards the south. The soil is fertile and highly cultivated, groves of noble trees abound, and the villages have a neat, prosperous look. A tract of forest jungle, called the tarai, stretches along the extreme north of the district, and teems with large game, such as tigers, bears, deer, wild pigs, &c. The river Sarda or Gogra forms the eastern boundary of the district and is the principal stream. Next in importance is the Ramganga, which receives as its tributaries most of the hill torrents of the Kumaon mountains. The Deoha is another great drainage artery and receives many minor streams. The Gomati or Gumti also passes through the district.
Environment
Bareilly is known to have moderate climate. The city lies entirely in the Ganges plains. The low-lying Ganges plains provide fertile alluvial soil suitable for agriculture. However, these some lower part of plains are prone to recurrent floods. Bareilly lies on the bank of river Ramganga and there are seven rivers passing through this district. The lower Himalayan range is just 40 km from the river and it lies in north of it.
Demographics
In 2011, Bareilly had population of 898,167 of which male and female were 477,438 and 420,729 respectively. In the previous census of India 2001, Bareilly District recorded increase of 27.66 percent to its population compared to 1991.
The initial provisional data suggest a density of 1,084 in 2011 compared to 878 of 2001. Total area under Bareilly district is of about 4,120 km2.
Average literacy rate of Bareilly city in 2011 were 84% compared to 81% of 2001. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy were 69.47 and 50.35 respectively. For 2001 census, same figures stood at 58.73 and 35.22 in Bareilly District. Total literate in Bareilly District were 2,297,158 of which male and female were 1,402,668 and 894,490 respectively. In 2001, Bareilly District had 1,387,124 in its total region.
With regards to Sex Ratio in Bareilly, it stood at 883 per 1000 male compared to 2001 census figure of 871. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per latest reports of Census 2011 Directorate.

Bareilly District population constituted 2.24 percent of total Uttar Pradesh population. In 2001 census, this figure for Bareilly District was at 2.24 percent of Uttar Pradesh population.
 
In census enumeration, data regarding child under 0–6 age were also collected for all districts including Bareilly. There were total 669,681 children under age of 0–6 against 719,217 of 2001 census. Of total 669,681 male and female were 352,479 and 317,202 respectively. Child Sex Ratio as per census 2011 was 906 compared to 906 of census 2001. In 2011, Children under 0–6 formed 15.00 percent of Bareilly District compared to 19.88 percent of 2001. There was net change of −4.88 percent in this compared to previous census of India.
The area under the city region is 123.46 km². The density of the population is among the high in the country touching 5000 per km2.

Muslims constitute 33.89% of the population. Muslims of Bareilly follow different fiqhs (schools of jurisprudence or sects). More than ninety percent of the Muslim population follow Sunni Hanafi while ten percent follow Shia Ithnā‘ashariyyah. The Sunni Hanafi are subdivided into 75% Barelvi and 25%Deobandi fiqhs.
According to Census of India, 2001, Hindus form 64.81% of population in the district.  Prominent categories of population are - BaniyaPunjabi,KayasthKurmijatav, deval Thakurs, etc.
Sikhs form 0.80% of population, Christians - 0.26%, Buddhists - 0.20%, Jains - 0.02%, and others - 0.02%. 
Bareilly has an average literacy rate of 84%, higher than the national average of 74%, with 90% of the males and 77% of females literate making it under top three districts in terms of literacy in Uttar Pradesh. The main languages spoken are HindiEnglishUrduPunjabi, and Kumaoni.
For administrative convenience, the district of Bareilly has been divided into six tehsils namely Bareilly (Main), AonlaFaridpurMirganj,Nawabganj, and Baheri and 14 blocks.

The Barabanki district is one of four districts of Faizabad division, lies at the very heart of Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh state of India, and forms as it were a centre from which no less than seven other districts radiate. It is situated between 27°19' and 26°30' north latitude, and 80°05' and 81°51’ east longitude; it runs in a south-easterly direction, confined by the nearly parallel streams of the Ghagra and Gomti. With its most northern point it impinges on the Sitapur district, while its north-eastern boundary is washed by the waters of the Ghagra, beyond which lie the districts ofBahraich district and Gonda district. Its eastern frontier marches with Faizabad district, and the Gomti forms a natural boundary to the south, dividing it from the Sultanpur district. On the west it adjoins the Lucknow district. The extreme length of the district from east to west may be taken at 57 mi (92 km), and the extreme breadth at 58 mi (93 km); the total area is about 1,504 sq mi (3,900 km2): its population amounts to 2,673,581, being at the rate of 686.50 to the square km. The Barabanki city is the district headquarters. Barabanki district has been known to be a favourite haunt of saints and ascetics, literatteurs and intellectuals, besides being a battlefield for freedom fighters.
The district under British rule had an area of 1,769 sq mi (4,580 km2). In 1856 it came, with the rest of Oudh, under British rule. During the Sepoy war of 1857-1858 the whole of the Bara Banki talukdars joined the mutineers, but offered no serious resistance after the capture of Lucknow. 
It stretches out in a level plain interspersed with numerous jhils or marshes. In the upper part of the district the soil is sandy, while in the lower part it is clayey and produces finer crops. The district is well fed by rivers Ghaghra (forming the northern boundary), Gomti (flowing through the middle of the district) and Kalyani and their tributaries, for the major part of the year. Some rivers dry out in the summer, and get flooded during the rainy season, creating havoc. The changing course of the river Ghagra changes the land area in the district, year to year.
The principal crops are rice, wheat, pulse and other food-grains and sugarcane. Trade in agricultural produce is active. Both the bordering rivers are navigable; and the district is traversed by two lines of the Northern Railway and North-Eastern Railway, with branches having total length of 131 km. It has good road connectivity also including National Highways (NH 24ANH 28NH 28C & NH 56A), State Highways and various link roads.
The minority population in the district is over 24 per cent.

History 
 The district of Barabanki also known as the Entrance to Poorvanchal, has the privilege of being the penance ground to numerous saints and ascetics. This is a place of great antiquity.

There are several ancient sayings to the naming of this district. It was known before the Muslim conquest as Jasnaul, from Jas, a raja of the Bhar tribe, who is said to have founded it before 1000 AD. With a change of proprietors came a change of name. The Muslim owners divided the lands into twelve shares, over which the respective proprietors quarrelled so incessantly that they were called the Barah Banke, or twelve quarrelsome men. Banka, in Awadhi, meaning a bully or brave. Others derive the name from ban, meaning wood or jungle, and interpret Barabanki as the twelve shares of jungle. 
District Barabanki was known as Dariyabad with its headquarters at Dariyabad town established by an officer in the army of Mohammed Shah Shariqi by the name Dariab Khan. It remained the district headquarters till 1858 AD,  The headquarters were later moved toNawabganj in 1859 AD. the other popular name of Barabanki
Ramayana Era
It is said that in ancient times this district was part of the kingdom ruled by Suryavanshi kings, whose capital was Ayodhya. KingDashrath and his famous son, Ram were of this dynasty. Guru Vashisht was their Kulguru, and he preached and taught the young royal princes of the dynasty at Satrikh, initially known as Saptrishi.
Mahabahrat era
Parijaat tree a sacred baobab tree in the village of Kintoor on the banks of Ghaghra.  Near a temple (known as Kunteshwar Mahadev temple) established by Kunti, is a special tree called Parijaat which is said to grow from Kunti's ashes.  Historically, though these saying may have some bearing or not, but it is true that this tree is from a very ancient background. 
This district was under the rule of the Chandravanshi kings for a very long period. During the Mahabharat era, it was part of the 'Gaurav Rajya' and this part of land was known by the name Kurukshetra. Pandav along with their mother Kunti had spent some time on the banks of river Ghaghra during their exile.
Bazaar Dharam Mandi (Dhamedi) and the famous Lodheshwar Mahadeva's Shivling are other proof that this region had an important place even five thousand years ago during the Mahabharat period.
Pre-historic
Greater part of Barabanki was included in Pachhimrath country (the territory between rivers Ghaghra and Gomti[12]), one of the five divisions of the kingdom of Rama. 
Before 1000 AD. Jas, a raja of the Bhar tribe is said to have founded the locality of Jasnaul which later, after the Muslim conquest of the region came to be known as Bara Banki or Barabanki. 

After 1000 till 1525
Sihali, was conquered, and its sovereign, a Siharia Chhattri, was killed. Kintur was captured, and its Bhar queen, Kintama slain. 
The Muslims had made their first permanent settlement in this district at Satrikh, in 421 AH. / 1030 AD.[5]
As per the historical documentation available, in 1030 AD. this region was attacked by Sayyed Salar Masood, nephew of Mahmood of Ghazni. In 1032 AD. Salar died. 
The battle in which Somvanshi Rajput chief Sohil Deo (or Sohel Dal) of Sahet-Mahet a small northern kingdom (he was the conqueror ofSayyed Salar Masood) was subversed  by Sri Chandradeo, the Rathor monarch of Kannauj was fought in Satrikh village of the district. 
In 1049 AD. / 441 AH, the Kings of Kanauj and Manikpur were defeated and driven from Oudh by Qutub-ud-din of Medina. The Muslim invasion was more successful in Bara Banki than elsewhere. In 586 AH. / 1189 AD, Sihali was conquered by Shekh Nizam-ud-din of Herat, Ansari. Zaidpur was occupied by them in 636 AH, when Sayyad Abd-ul-Wahid turned out the Bhars, altering the name of the town from Suhalpur. The colony of Musalman Bhattis is reported to have arrived about the same time, although some place it as early as 596 AH. / 1199 AD. They came from Bhatnair or Bhattiana, in the Punjab and Rajputana and settled at Mawai Maholara. 
After 1350 AD. Muslim immigrants started to settle in great number in the district until nearly to middle of eighteenth century.[15] At the Muslims first permanently settled in Oudh. 
Rudauli was occupied about 700 AH, in the reign of Alla-ud-din Khilji, whose forces had just about the same time destroyed Anhalwara, Chittor, Dcogir, Mandor, Jessulmere, Gagraun, Bundi, in fact nearly every remaining seat of Chhattri power. Rasulpur was conquered about 1350 AD. / 756 AH. Daryabad was founded about 850 AH. / 1444 AD, by Dariab Khan Subahdar. Fatehpur was colonized by Fateh Khan, a brother of Dariab Khan, and about the same time. The villages of Barauli and Barai, near Rudauli, were occupied, and gave their name to large estates about the middle of the fifteenth century. 
Simultaneously, however, with this latter immigration of the Muslims there was one of Chhattris. The mysterious tribe of Kalhans, which numbers some twenty thousand persons, are said to be descended from Achal Singh, who came in as a soldier of fortune with Dariab Khan about 1450 AD. Raja Achal Singh is a great name in the Middle Ages of Oudh; he had large property—some state that his capital was Bado Sarai, on the old bank of the Ghagra. 
At this time Ibrahim Shah Sharqi, reigned at Jaunpur. Oudh was the battle ground—the border land between Sharqis of Jaunpur and the Lodis of Delhi—and their princes, as the tide of conquest surged backwards and forwards. Dariab Khan settled Hindu soldiers as garrisons,—the war being now one between Muslims, and no longer one of religion. The Kalhans are said to have come from Gujarat, the same nursery of Chhattris from which the Ahban, the Pan war, the Gahlot, the Gaur, the Bais, and many other Oudh clans, are believed to have emigrated. 
The isolated Suryajvanshi estate of Haraha and the Somvanshi Bahrelia estate of Surajpur were established by small colonies of Chhattri soldiers, who had been dismissed from service about eighteen generations ago (in 1877). 
Mughal era (1526–1732)
During the reign of the great Mughal emperor Akbar this district was divided under the sirkars of Oudh, Lucknow and Manikpur. The following parganas are mentioned in Akbar's time videAin-i-Akbari:
Nawabs of Awadh (1732-1856)
In 1165 AH. / 1751 AD, the Raikwars seem to have headed a great Hindu movement to shake off the Musalman Government. 
Safdar Jang, the wazir, had been absent at Delhi; his naib, Newal Rae, had been defeated and killed at the Kali nadi three years before by the Bangash Afghans of Farukhabad, who then overran the whole province except a few of the fortified towns. In 1749 AD, Safdar Jang himself, with an army of 60,000 men, was defeated by them ; and if at this time the Oudh Chhattris had risen, the Mughal authority might have been overthrown, but they waited till after Safdar Jang, in 1750 AD. / 1164 AH, had bribed or beaten the Rohillas out of the country. 
Then the tribes gathered themselves together under the leadership of Anup Singh, the Raja of Ramnagar Dhameri; the Janwar of Balrampur, the Bisens of Gonda, and numerous other lords assembled their forces for an attack on Lucknow, now denuded of the troops which had gone into Rohilkhand. The Shekhzadas of Lucknow came out to meet the enemy, they were joined by the Khanziidas of Mahmudabad and Bilahra, who were connected with them by marriage. 
The battle was fought at Chheola Ghat on the Kalyani, on the road to Lucknow. The Musalmans, headed by Nawab Muizz-ud-din Khan of Mahmudabad, won the day. The Balrainpur raja was killed it is said, and an immense number of the allied host, some 15,000 were killed or wounded on both sides. Nor would this number be at all remarkable when large armies, inflamed against each other by religious hatred in addition to the ordinary motives, fought at close quarters. From this event dates the rise of the Khanzadas. The Raikwars were proportionately depressed; the estates of both Baundi and Ramnagar were broken up, and but a few villages left with the raja. The process of agglomeration commenced again, seventy years afterwards, about 1816, on the death of the sagacious Saadat Ali Khan, and before annexation, in 1856, the Ramnagar raja had recovered the whole family estate and added to it largely, while his brother of Baundi had similarly added 172 villages to his domain. 
The principal chiefs of Bara Banki during the last years of Nawabi were: 
Taluqa of Ramnagar — The large property consisted of 253 villages belongs to Raja Sarabjit Singh. The Raja was the head of the Raikwar clan, who immigrated to Oudh from the hill country about Kashmir in about 1400 A. D. It is a curious fact that whereas all Rajputs place a special value on the wood of the neem tree, the Raikwars alone are forbidden to use it.
Taluqa of Haraha — The proprietor of this taluqa was Raja Narindr Bahadur, the head of the Surajbans Thakurs. His father, Raja Chbatarpat Singh, is yet alive. Both father and son were afflicted with mental incapacity. The estate, which consisted of sixty-six villages, paid a revenue of Rs. 55,000, was under the management of the local authorities. Certain members of the Raja's family held the estates of Ranimau Qiampur in a separate qubuliat in the Nawabi, and they have thus escaped being placed under the taluqdar's sanad.
Taluqa of Surajpur — This estate comprised fifty-six villages. The proprietor was Raja Udatt Partab Singh, the head of Bahrelia Bais Thakurs. The Raja was mentally and physically unfit to manage his estate ; but so long as his maternal grandfather, Udatt Narain, lived there was no fear of under-proprietors, tenants or patwaris defrauding the family.
The late Raja Singji was a most formidable and violent landholder until he was attacked by Maharaja Man Singh, captured and taken prisoner to Lucknow, where he died in jail. It was mainly owing to the bad example set by Singji that the Daryabad district was so turbulent under the native Government, that amils and chakladars were to use a native expression unable to breathe in it— (Nak men dam karta tha.)
Taluqa of Jahangirabad — The taluqdar of Jahangirabad was a Qidwai Sheikh, Raja Farzand Ali Khan. He owed his position to two circumstances:
  1. his marriage with the daughter of Raja Razzaq Bakhsh, the late proprietor of the taluqa;
  2. to a fortuitous incident which occurred about three years before annexation.
Farzand Ali was the darogah in charge of the Sikandarbagh at Lucknow. On one occasion of the last king of Oudh visiting the garden, he was struck with the appearance of this young man, and presenting him with a khilat, directed him to attend at the palace.
With such a signal mark of the royal favour, Farzand Ali's advancement was rapid, and, under the interest of the influential eunuch, Bashir-ud-daula, he obtained a farman designating him the Raja of Jahangirabad. This taluqdar followed the deposed king to Calcutta, and was there during the mutinies. Raja Farzand Ali was very intelligent, and well able to manage his estate with prudence and circumspection.
Taluqa of Barai — Chaudhri Ghulam Farid, a Siddiqi Shekh, was the largest landholder of the Rudauli tahsil. He owned thirty-nine villages. At the summary settlement before annexation, he contemplated depriving the children of his cousin, Mumtaz Ahmad, of their share in the estate, unmindful of the past long possession of his cousin; but at the earnest representations of Sayyad Abdul Hakim, an extra assistant commissioner, who was respected throughout the district, he made a fair division; in fact, he gave them half the estate.
Taluqa of Usmanpur - The Taluqdar of Usmanpur were Bisen rajput. This is the most famous Bisen Khanzada family. This estate was founded by one Kaunsal Singh (Raja Khushal Singh), who obtained an estate as a reward for military service under the Mughal Emperor Humayun. One of his sons Lakhan Singh converted to Islam, and took the name Lakhu Khan. The estate of Usmanpur was founded by Ghanzafar Khan, who was confirmed ownership of Usmanpur and neighbouring villages by the Nawabs of Awadh. He owned forty villages.
Taluqas of Satrikh —This estate comprised 85 villages. All the villages pay their 'Lagan' (Tax)to the Taluqedar of Satrikh. After 1857, Satrikh estate was ruled by Taluqedar Qazi / Kazi Ikram Ahmad and preceded by Qazi Kamaluddin Ahmad. The previous Chaudhry's were dispossessed for resistance to the British during the War of Independence. They were descendants of the original Usmani's who immigrated to Oudh in the early part of the millennium.
Taluqas of Rudauli —there were in all forty-three.
1857 war of independence
Unlike what occurred in the districts of Hardoi, Gonda, and Lucknow, the whole body of the taluqdars in this district joined the cause of the deposed king and the mutineers. They offered no resistance however, of any moment to the advance of the British troops after the capture of Lucknow ; in the battle of Nawabganj. Many kings and princes opposed the expansion of British rule into this district by waging wars against them. During the British Raj, several kings fought for their independence and laid down their lives doing so, the great revolutionaries. Raja Balbhadra Singh Chehlari along with about 1000 revolutionaries sacrificed their lives for independence from the British rule. In 1857 at Nawabganj Sir Hope Grant defeated the revolutionaries. During the middle of the nineteenth century the revolutionaries put up their last front at Bhitauli which proved unsuccessful in comparison to the strong British forces. Leaving behind the Bhitauli front the aids along with Begum Hazrat MahalNana Saheb entered into the territory of Nepal to continue their freedom struggle from there. The last battle of the First War of Indian Independence was fought in December 1858 AD here in this district.
British (1858-1947)
The Sadr station (district headquarter) was placed at annexation and also after the mutinies at Daryabad, but owing to the stagnation of water in the immediate vicinity of the town, and to the prevalence of fever, the head quarters were removed in 1859 to Nawabganj, Bara Banki.

Independence movement

In 1921 Gandhiji started the Non-cooperation Movement, thereby igniting the flame of independence once again. Here too, the district leading from the front, opposed the arrival of Prince of Wales to India. In the War of Independence against the British from the year 1922 to 1934 during the Khilafat movement the district participated whole heartidely in the growing movement against foreign fabrics, etc.  Protests were organised and large number of freedom fighter courted arrests at the Government High School, Nawabganj, Shri Rafi Ahmad Kidwai was also arrested. During 1922 Khilafat Movement, 1930 Salt Movement, and in 1942 AD the Quit India Movement, the people of this district actively participated in these movements thereby giving sleepless nights to the British Raj. As a result, the District Congress Office was sealed. But, the local leaders continued their protests remaining underground. The Haidergarh Post office was looted on 24 August 1942 as a mark of protest by the revolutionaries. Similar incidents took place at the HPO Barabanki and Satrikh. The people of this district enthusiastically respond to the call of Satyagraha and large numbers courted arrest.
Geography
The district is for the most part flat to monotony, there is an utter absence of mountains; the most elevated point is about four hundred and thirty feet above the sea; and there are few points of view from which any expanse of country can be surveyed. The verdure and beauty of the groves with which it is studded in every direction redeem the prospect from bare ugliness, and when the spring crops are green and the jhils yet full of water, the richness of the landscape is very striking. Here and there patches of uncultivated waste are to be seen, but a high assessment and security of tenure are rapidly converting them into waving fields of corn. Towards the north, especially along the old bank of the Ghaghra, the ground is undulating and richly wooded, while to the south there is a gentle slope down to the Gomti. The monotonous level is broken on the north by an abrupt fall, the ridge running parallel to the Ghaghra at a distance of from one mile (1.6 km) to three miles (5 km), is said to indicate what was formerly the right bank of the river. The district is intersected at various parts by rugged ravines.
Location and boundaries
The district Barabanki is situated about 29 km in the East direction of Lucknow the Capital of Uttar Pradesh. This district being one of the four districts of Faizabad division, is located in the heart of Awadh region and it lies between Latitudes 26° 30' North and 27° 19' North and Longitudes 80° 58' East and 81° 55' East. District Barabanki is surrounded by district Faizabad in the East, districts Gonda and Bahraich in the North East, district Sitapur in the North West, district Lucknow in the West, district Rae Bareli in the South and district Sultanpur in the South East. The riverGhaghra forms the North Eastern Boundary separating Barabanki from Bahraich and Gonda. 
Area
According to the 1991 census the area of the district was 4401 km². The districts were reconstituted and Tehsil Rudauli of this district was merged with district Faizabad, thereby reducing the land area of the district. Now the area of the district stands reduced to 3895.4 km². The area is liable to vary from year to year due to the slightest change in the course of the river Ghaghra, because this slight variation makes a noticeable change in the overall area of the district. 
Topography
The district can be topographically divided into three main regions. 
  1. Tarai region, the area in the North East towards river Ghaghra.
  2. Gomti par region, the wide area from South West to South East of the district.
  3. Har  region, which is situated at some height to the Gomti Par region, the whole tract is gently undulating land with gentle slope from the North West to South East.
River system and water resources
The district is well fed by rivers GhaghraGomti and Kalyani with their tributaries for major part of the year. Although some of them dryout during summers and create havoc during rainy season by flooding. 
Ghaghra
The principal river in the district is the Ghaghra, at a short distance from Bahramghat; in the Fatehpur tahsil the rivers Chauka and Sarda meet, and their united stream is called the Ghaghra. Both those component rivers take their rise in the Himalaya and at their confluence form a stream, which at Bahramghat is in the rainy season from one and a half to two miles (3 km), and in the dry season half mile in breadth. The Gogra divides the Bara Banki district from the districts of Bahraich and Gonda. It flows in a south-easterly direction past Faizabad, and finally empties itself into the Ganges at Arrah, above Dinapore. This river is navigable for flat-bottomed steamers as far as Bahramghat; but the traffic is at present confined to country boats which ply in considerable numbers between Bahramghat and Sarun district. It has been stated that the ancient course of the river is indicated at a distance of from one to two miles (3 km) from the existing right bank by a ridge about 20 feet (6.1 m) high. The low lands between the ancient and present channels generally have fine crops of rice, but the water sometimes lies too long after the rains and rots them, and the spring crops cannot be sown. The river is not utilized for purposes of irrigation. Some portion of Tehsil Fatehpur and some portion of Tehsil Ram Sanehi Ghat falls on its banks.
The Ghaghraflows for forty-eight miles on the border of the district; the dry weather discharge is 19,000 cubic feet (540 m3). The principal ferries are at Kaithi, Kamiar, and Paska Ghat; there is a boat-bridge during the cold season at Bahramghat.
Gomti
Next in importance is the Gomti, which runs through the tahsil of Haidargarh and some portion of the tehsil Ram Sanehi Ghat and separates the Bara Banki district from the districts of Lucknow, Sultanpur and Faizabad. It runs like the Ghagra in a south-easterly direction, has a well-defined bank and a stream which is fordable in the dry weather, and is about 40 yards broad. There is considerable traffic on the Gumti by country boats.
The Gomti flows for 105 miles (169 km) through, or on the border of the district, but its course is so circuitous that the direct distance from the point of entrance to that of exit is only forty-two miles; it is not therefore so useful for navigation, and it lies too low for irrigation; its dry weather discharge is 500 cubic feet (14,000 L). Its water is actually at a lowet level than that of the Ghagra. At the junction of the Kalyani the former is only 301 feet (92 m) above the sea; at Rudauli, the watershed between it and the Ghagra the altitude is 340 feet (100 m); and at Kaithi Ghat the Ghagra is 314 feet (96 m).
Kalyani
Kalyani is a small river of local origin. It rises in the Fatehpur tahsil, and after wandering through the district in a most tortuous course, empties itself into the Gomti near the village of Dwarkapur. It flows through the district along with its tributaries, covering most of central portion of the district. Kalyani creates havoc during the rains, flooding considerable part of the district, though during summers there is hardly any water in certain sections of the river. It is an important source of water for major period of the year, with banks precipitous at a number of places.
In the rains of 1872, the river Kalyani presented a vast volume of water 269 feet (82 m) broad, 337 feet (103 m) deep, rushing along with a velocity of 5.74 miles per hour and with a discharge of 51,540 cubic feet per second (1,459 m3/s). In ordinary monsoons the highest discharge is about a quarter less than this.
The river is crossed by the railway with a girder bridge with (6) six openings, each of 60 feet (18 m).

Places of Indian Rebellion of 1857(4)

Ballabhgarh (or Ballabgarh  ) is a town and a tehsil (subdistrict) in Faridabad District of HaryanaIndia, and is part of the National Capital Region. Jat Raja Nahar Singh (1823–1858) was the last king of the princely state, he was executed died for taking part in the 1857 war of independence in 1858. The state was founded by Balram Singh, in 1739, who also built the Nahar Singh Mahal palace in the same year. The small kingdom of Ballabhgarh was only 20 miles (32 km) from Delhi, and today lies on the National Highway 2, a major portion of historical Grand Trunk Road. 


History

The name Ballabgarh is a corruption of Balramgarh, 'the fort of Balram,' Balram Singh, a Jat chief who held the surrounding country under Suraj Mal of Bharatpur, and built the fort and palace, Nahar Singh Mahal in 1739. In 1775 the estate was transferred by the Delhi emperor to Ajit Singh, whose son Bahadur Singh was recognized in 1803 as chief and built the town. 
The founders of the princely state of Ballabgarh had come from village Janauli, which is more than 2000 years old. The Tewatia Jat Sardar Gopal Singh left Janauli in 1705 (in Palwal) and got settled at Sihi, a village of Tewatia Jats in Ballabgarh at a distance of about 5 km from Ballabhgarh. The Mughal ruler Aurangzeb had died. Gopal Singh started establishing power in Delhi and Mathura areas. With the help of villagers of ‘Lagon’ he attacked Rajput Chaudhary of that area and did a treaty with Mugal officer Murtija Khan of Faridabad and became Chaudhary of Faridabad parganain 1710. He wanted to expand his army and collect huge wealth but died soon. His successor was Charan Das. Charan Das was also ambitious and when saw weakening of the Mughal rule, he stopped paying malgujari (octroi). The army of Mughals arrested Charan Das.
Charan Das's son, Balram Singh, later rose to a powerful king. Princely state of Ballabgarh is after his name. He was brother in law of Maharaja Suraj Mal and mama of Jawahar SinghJats along the Royal Delhi-Agra route at that time were in revolt against the oppressive Mughal rule. Tewatias of this area had already established themselves as counter force in this area. Balram Singh often called Ballu by the local people moved on a few Elephants, Horses and Camels loaded with Big drums (Nagaade) and Dhaunse (big band) followed by his local army. Went wherever Ballu with this band it was assumed that area was no longer of Mughals and Ballu had won that. It was a sort of Aswamedh Yagna that he performed. Here from started a saying "Dheeng Dheeng Ballu ka Raj". Immediately peace returned to those areas, which were won over by Ballu.
Murtija Khan’s son Akvitmahmud killed Balram Singh on 29 November 1753. After Balram Singh, Maharaja Suraj Mal appointed Balram Singh’s sons Bisan Singh and Kisan Singh as Kiledars. They ruled Ballabhgarh till 1774, when Hira Singh became the ruler of Ballabhgarh.
Bahadur Singh's successor Raja Nahar Singh ascended the throne in 1829 and proved to be a just ruler. Raja Nahar Singh was ruler of 101 villages of Ballabhgarh. Raja Nahar Singh, along with Nawab Ahmed Ali Khan of Farrukhnagar, and rulers of neighbouring principalities, like Rewari and Jhajjar, took part in the India's First War of Independence (Indian Rebellion) in May 1857.[5] On 10 September 1857, just four days before the British Army stormed Delhi, Nahar Singh wrote a letter to Governor General of IndiaLord Elllenborough (1842-1844), whom he had met as a young man, seeking his protection. The letter dictated in English to a secretary, is to be auctioned at Bonhams “Photography and Travel: India and Beyond” auction in London, on October 4, 2011 and is expected to fetch an estimated £1,000 to 1,500. According to an official, "it seems was written as a ruse to deceive the British in the event of his capture... as he was fully committed to the cause of Indian Independence". 
After the mutiny was suppressed, he along with all the rulers were captured, tried and executed and their estate confiscated by the British Raj.  As was Gulab Singh Saini, the commander-in-chief of the army of state of Ballabhgarh. The territory of Ballabhgarh was added into the Delhi district as a new tehsil, which was now made part of Punjab, while Faridabad became the headquarters of the pargana till now in jagir by the Ballabgarh rulers.  It was made a municipality in 1867. 
In early 20th century Ballabhgarh was a tehsil of Delhi district, which contained towns of Ballabhgarh and Faridabad, with a population of 126,693 in 1901, up from 119,652 in 1891. Ballabhgarh town had a population of 4,506, (1901). 
Demographics
The total population of Ballabgarh, as per the 2001 Census of India was 187067, up from 144215 in 1991 Census. Of this, 0 are Scheduled Tribes (STs) and 37428 are Scheduled Caste (SC),However Jats has highest density along with RajputsPunjabi migrants, Brahmins. The sex ratio of the population in Ballabgarh is 851 females per 1000 males.The literacy rate in the city is 65.35 per cent, 79.96 for males and 48.25 for females. 
Nahar Singh Palace
The earliest parts of Nahar Singh's palace, called Nahar Singh Mahal were constructed by his ancestor Rao Balram after whom the estate was named, who came to power in 1739, the construction however continued in parts till about 1850, under Nahar Singh.

Places of Indian Rebellion of 1857(3)

Arrah,  Is a city and a municipal corporation in Bhojpur district in the state of BiharIndia. The village's name is also transliterated as Ara. It is the district headquarters of Bhojpur district, located near the confluence of the Ganges and Sone rivers, some 24 mi. from Danapur and 36 miles fromPatna.


History

Arrah is an ancient city with references in mythological stories and Greek geographical works. It has been a centre of attraction for Jainism with dozens of old temples and hermitages. It is known for the important battle (Battle of Buxar) in October, 1764, when Mir Kasim, Nawab of Bengal with the support of the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II and Shuja-ud-daulla, Nawab of Avadh was defeated by the East India Company Army whilst Henry Vansittart, was Governor General, the key event establishing the British colonialisation of India.
During the Indian rebellion of 1857, a small party of British officers and Indian soldiers was besieged in the Little House at Arrah, by a band of armed soldiers under the command of 80 year old Veer Kunwar Singh, the Zamindar of adjacent Jagdishpur. They withstood the siege for three weeks until relieved by other East India Company troops. Babu Kunwar Singh was the only successful freedom fighter of the rebellion of 1857. The British failed to defeat him. Veer Kunwar Singh (1777–1858), one of the leaders of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 belonged to a royal Kshatriya (Rajput) house of Jagdispur, currently a part of Bhojpur district, Bihar state, India. At the age of 80 years, during India’s First War of Independence (1857), he actively led a select band of armed soldiers against the troops under the command of the East India Company, and also recorded victories in many battles.
